Faculty Pro-Seminars
(Faculty Resource Center)
There are at least
four different types of seminars that may be of interest to faculty
on campus. The first is a series of pro-seminars hosted by the Faculty
Resource Center covering a range of topics such as academic literacy,
the digital divide, and using classroom assessment techniques. These
proseminars are offered throughout the school year and
are a good venue for faculty to discuss their values and beliefs about
teaching and learning within the context of the seminars' topics. Note that these proseminars are not to be confused with the college's Professional Development Workshop series coordinated by Dr. D. Hollems.
Here are a few
topics proposed for this coming semester. Note, an email announcement
will be sent to all faculty prior to the pro-seminar's presentation.
- Getting beyond diversity in thinking to diversity in practice (Dr. Denise Bacchus, English Skills department, September 26, 2 pm
to 4 pm, FRC building 1)
- Protecting your personal identity both on and off the Internet (Dr. Tom Mahoney, Administration of Justice Department, & Steve Cook, Apple Computer, October 15, 2 pm
to 4 pm, FRC building 1)
Faculty Teaching
& Learning Seminar
A second option
is the Faculty and Teaching Seminar hosted by Dr.
Jack Ullom, Dean of Educational Programs. This a 12 week series
of lectures and hands-on activities geared at introducing new contract
faculty to the workings of the college as well as introducing them
to generic instructional strategies that they can use in the classroom.
You can access
some of the materials at the web site for this course at http://www.4sbccfaculty.org/auth.asp.
Please contact Dr. Ullom (X2354) at ullomj@sbcc.net
in order to be considered for participation and to get a login ID
and password to the web site.
Dr. Peter A.
Angeles Colloquia (Philosophy Department)
The third option
is the Dr. Peter A. Angeles Colloquia hosted by the Center for Philosophy
in Education (CPE). These hour long seminars also cover a range of
topics but are more discipline-based. Check your email and the college's
FAST newsletter.
Check out the
CPE web
site for more info on past or upcoming Colloquia
Annual Faculty
Lecturer of the Year
And finally, there
is the annual faculty lecture of the year. The annual faculty lecturer
is nominated by both faculty, staff, and students as being an exemplar
teacher. See a few of the short video clips from the past few lecturers.
