FRC Catalog of Workshops

The following categories represent some of the types of workshops and presentations offered by the FRC.

Designing and Developing an Online Course -5 part series

(15 hours workshop time) + Summer Workshop (60 hours workshop time) + Flex time

The Online Institute is a series of ongoing workshops over the course of the fall or spring are designed to help teachers learn to teach online using WebCT, an online course management system. Though WebCT is used, the focus is on pedagogy, on course design and the development of effective teaching strategies. The Summer Workshop, a component of the Online Institute, takes place during the 2 weeks immediately following the spring semester; ite ends before the summer semester begins.

What follows is information about the Online Institute's Spring and Fall workshop series:

Intro to the Online Institute, part 1--Organizing your Course Home Page and uploading course content into WebCT

This session offers an inroduction to online teaching for those faculty interested in using WebCT. It is also the first meeting for those faculty members scheduled to make an online course. In this first session, WebCT is briefly demonstrated and faculty begin to customize their course home pages, upload their course pages, and to construct their course Table of Contents in the WebCT framework.

Intro to the Online Institute, part 2, Using Communication tools

This workshop will focus on teaching faculty how to use CMC tools to interact with students and on developing strategies that promote student online collaboration.

Intro to the Online Institute, part 3--Online Course Testing/Assessment

This is an introduction to WebCT's assessment tools, e.g., Quizmaker, Surveymaker, and Self-Assessment Tools. Faculty will construct a short MC/TF quiz for their online courses.

Intro to the Online Institute, part 4--Tracking your Students' Progress in WebCT

Faculty will use the WebCT course and page tracking features to examine student progress in their online or web-enhanced courses. They learn to configure/reconfigure their online gradebooks.

In this workshop, faculty will be introduced to the WebCT's set of student tools such as the course glossary, student presentation tool, etc., which can be used to supplement the primary activities in their online courses.

Using the WWW and Internet to Enhance your Course -- 2 part series

(6 hours workshop time)

This group of workshops focuses on faculty developing web pages using a tool that gives one more control over the look and interactivity of the web page than other types of tools such as MS Word, etc.

Electronic Library Tools and Research Strategies

Type of workshop: Presentation/Discussion/Hands-on

How to use Library and Student Hub tools to help students do productive, credible research on the Web.

Campus Pipeline: Moving from information to instruction: Integrating other WWW tools and resources with Campus Pipeline to extend the boundaries of traditional classroom courses.

This group of workshops focuses on helping faculty develop web pages using tools that give one more control over look and interactivity than does Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, etc.

From Microsoft Office to the Web: Using Powerpoint and Word to Create Web Pages

Microsoft Word and Powerpoint provide SAVE AS WEB page(s) options. Consequently, some faculty members have chosen to post their web pages to a web server. This workshop will focus on how Powerpoint and MS Word can be used to create web pages.

Using Campus Pipeline and the Student Hub to enhance your traditional classroom course - 5 part series

Introduction to Campus Pipeline & Syllabus Maker

Demonstration

This is an introductory session for faculty interested in finding out about Campus Pipeline, the college's student portal system. Campus Pipeline is the interface to college information on the web. It also provides communication tools for use by faculty in their classes. The Syllabus Maker offers faculty access to a course information tool that allows them to post and edit their calendar, policies, expectations, and assignments at any time from any computer with Internet connectivity. During the course of the workshop, participants produce a basic online syllabus.

Posting your files to the Web (WWW)

In this workshop, faculty wlill learn how to post (FTP) their files to the Web and make links to their files from Campus Pipeline.

Word and PowerPoint As Presentation tools

How to use Word and PowerPoint as presentation tools in a smart classroom, or format and convert them–graphics and media in tact– for instructional use on the WWW.

Making Lectures Interactive

Using PowerPoint, small groups, Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs), the Internet, and Student Presentations to foster active learning.

Using Technology to Enhance Instruction and Increase Student Success
Using PowerPoint and the Web to supplement instruction; incorporating Pipeline, the Syllabus Maker, and Hubs to support learning; working with Interactive Teleweb materials; teaching online using WebCT.


Demonstration & Discussion

This will be an introductory session to those faculty interested in finding out about Campus Pipeline, the college's student portal system. Campus pipeline is/will be the students and possibly teachers' interface to the college's information on the web. Campus Pipeline also provides a small set of communication tools for instruction that faculty can easily utilize in their classes.

Digital Imaging -- 3 part series

*Getting the most from your digital still camera

Introduction to the differences between digital and analog still cameras; simple camera operation, downloading of files for image manipulation, for printing, emailing or posting of images to the WWW.

Intro to Adobe Photoshop, part 1

Introduction to the use of slide and flatbed scanners; simple image manipulation, e.g., sizing, cropping, color correction; and saving files for use in MS Powerpoint or for the WWW.

Intro to Adobe Photoshop, part 2

Introduction to the use of layers, filters, and compositing digital images. Faculty members will shoot a picture using a digital camera and manipulate it using a variety of filters.

Creating a Professional Development Plan

Making a Personal Professional Development Plan that suits your needs, those of your Department, and meets State requirements.

Managing Your Email Using Groupwise

Hands-on workshop

This hands-on workshop will focus on teaching tips and techniques to manage your email including setting rules and filters to sort your email, etc.

Intro to the Oracle Student Info System (SIS)

Presentation/Demo

This workshop outlines the technology initiatives brought about through Oracle implementation that will impact faculty members' work, including communication, e.g., email, grade or record keeping, and student information lookup, e.g., Oracle SIS. A brief discussion will follow the presentation allowing faculty to discuss these initiatives with program developers and administrators.

Intro to Micrograde

This hands-on workshop will focus on teaching you how to set up gradebooks for each of your courses using the electronic rosters provided to you by the Information Resources Division. Participants should bring at least one of their electronic rosters on a floppy disk. Contact the college computer help-desk at X2215 if you are having trouble locating your roster.

Designing Dynamic Media for the WWW and Classroom

Producing REAL audio files for the WWW

Some faculty members choose to supplement classroom activities with audio excerpts from their lectures, etc. This hands-on workshop will focus on faculty developing a short, single audio presentation and posting it to the WWW.
