Here are some reasons for using human presence tools to enhance contact with students during office hours:
- Share and Interact with students at a distance
- Make use of technology for student tracking and course management
- Fits in with students’ varying work schedules
Option 1. Voice alone – telephone or SKYPE (local or long distance but students must also have SKYPE installed on their computers)
Technology required: Telephone, FREE Skype software, computer, and microphone for computer
Option 2. Face-to-Face (at a distance) – Skype or CCC Confer (office meeting type) and desktop sharing if you have 2.8X or later version of Skype
Technology required: FREE Skype software, computer, and webcam for computer
Option 3. Face to Face (at a distance) + sharing of files like images, powerpoint, and screen captures of other file types, e.g., word docs, PDF files, Excel files, etc. – Use either Teach and Confer or Elluminate LIVE session in Moodle – You can do text chat, webtours, or application sharing as well in either of these types. Finally, you can also record the sessions using teach and confer or Elluminate LIVE.
Technology required: Computer and webcam for computer
SKYPE training – Make an individual appointment with Jeff Barnes at email@example.com or X2395. You need a computer to install SKYPE on as well as a microphone or webcam (for picture)
CCC Confer system – These folks provide the training but the backbone of most of their tools is Elluminate. Sign up for CCC Confer training at http://www.cccconfer.org/trainingCenter/trainingCenter.aspx. CCC Confer is free to students and community college faculty but the activity must be affiliated with your college. In other words, you can’t set up meetings with fraternal organizations or community groups like churches.
Elluminate LIVE – Must access through the add an “Elluminate LIVE session” activity feature in your Moodle course shell. The Elluminate LIVE sessions are comparable to the TEACH and CONFER activities at CCC Confer.
