English as a Second Language Assessment

 

To take English as a Second Language classes please follow these steps:
Para tomar cursos de inglés como segundo idioma (ESL) tome los siguientes pasos:
1.   Apply online.
For help call or text the ESL Office, (805) 699-6618. 		 1.   Solicite por internet (online).
Si necesita ayuda, llame o envíe un mensaje de texto a la oficina de ESL, (805) 699-6618.
2.   Email esl@sbcc.edu to set up an appointment for ESL placement.  2.   Envíe un correo electrónico a esl@sbcc.edu para agendar una cita para presentar su examen de nivelación.
3.   Attend a required Orientation with SBCC Academic Counselors.
English Orientation: Attend the SBCC online orientation and then sign up for a Class Planning session. 

Spanish Orientation: You will choose from one of the dates below after you complete the online application and assessment.		 3.   Asista una orientación obligatoria con consejeros académicos de SBCC.

Orientación en inglés:  Asiste a la orientación de SBCC en línea y después agenda una cita para completar una Class Planning Session.  

Orientación en español: Vas a escoger entre las fechas a continuación después de completar la solicitud y escoger tu nivel en línea.

Process for challenging an ESL placement

When a new student does not agree with their ESL placement results, there are options for the student to challenge the results:

1.  Before the new semester begins, the student may contact the assessment office at assessment@pipeline.sbcc.edu and request that their results be challenged. 

2. By the end of week 2 of the new semester, the student may contact their ESL instructor by email or during instructor office hours and ask to challenge their placement.

3. By the end of week 3, the student may contact the ESL Assessment Coordinator, Robin Goodnough, at ragoodnough@pipeline.sbcc.edu with a cc to the ESL Department Chair, Marit ter Mate-Martinsen, martinse@sbcc.edu to challenge their placement.
